If you don't like {HoD}, why not {bIQ Duj pIn}?
Still sounds like a professional to me, considering how many names of duty stations are formed with pIn.
I think the concept you're really searching for is a distinction between a professional and an amateur. If these concepts were verbs, for instance, you could just modify the nouns {beq} or {pIn} with them.
Duj ra'wI' is what I would use for someone who is a ship commander, but doesn't hold the military rank of captain. I guess you could also add -oy if you wanted to be super-informal, (Duj) ra'wI'oy.
