Word: affix

Category:

Description/Reason:

morpheme that is attached to a word stem to form a new word or word form. There's {moHaq} 'prefix', and {mojaq} 'suffix', but no word for the broader category (and other options, like infixes).

  1. When talking about Klingon, I don't think there's a situation where a word for "affix" would be better than referring to them individually, or calling them {moHaq mojaq joq} when truly necessary.
When talking about other languages, once you start to include "other options, like infixes" I believe you've gone all the way to the "morpheme" idea.

    1. The way contemporary linguistic theory conceptualizes the concepts of affixes and morphemes, morphemes may be bound or unbound. Affixes are by definition bound.
