I've always just imagined cartilage ground up into grains, and mixed with
herbs (possibly also grains, powders, or more chunky parts like dried leaves
or twigs).  Grains of cartilage with herbs.  If that helps.

A mixture could be anything (liquid, grains, powders, etc.), as long as it
is mixed with herbs.
