Actually, that association first showed up in the original 1970s edition of
the _Starfleet_Technical_Manual_.
The book is full of interesting tidbits, but it's not canonical (in the
Trek sense), and much of it has been later contradicted onscreen, so
shouldn't be relied upon, but a lot of things that later showed up
onscreen did come from it.
