Not necessarily. It's a staple of a lot of science fiction. The galactic rim 
isn't too important in astronomy, but as I understand it, the galactic rim 
is the border or edge of the galaxy - those regions lying right at the ends 
of the spiral arms. I wouldn't have understood "galactic rim" to refer to 
the energy shield *within* the galaxy; after all, the rim of a wheel isn't 
on the inside.

In light of that, I'd probably just use something like "die Galaxienkante" 
(my German's not great, so forgive me if my grammar sucks. {{:D) Either way, 
a literal translation's probably about as close as you'll get, I suspect.
