I reread the first edition of Fowler's Modern English Usage to
analyse the changes. When I returned here to see arguments based
on logic and deduction for one construction over another, I laughed.
Looking at the path correct English usage has travelled in less than
a century showed me that never can logic predict normal usage in a
real language.
