Although the derivation of the name of that holiday are still very 
evident and many people still mean that by it,  MOST of the world, these 
days, has forgotten all of the original meaning and treat the day as 
something completely different.  (In fact, in some places Mardi Gras 
lasts anywhere from a week to a month.)  I think that was his point.  Not 
that we can't find out the meaning behind the original words, but that the 
translation is not always literal.
