Not to be contrary, but "Mardi Gras" has both to do with "Tuesday" AND "fat".

Mardi Gras comes the day before the Christian "Ash Wednesday" in which lent
starts (which is typically a time of fasting).  So, the Tuesday before, you
"eat as much as you can".  Nes pas?
