Hmm.  Not necessarily, since it could be a "true" indefinite subject as
opposed to the more passive-voice reading (i.e. when someone built the
ship... that's what the someone used).  But I agree that a lone "chen"
would be better, even here.

Actually, would it?  In order for the ship to take form, metal was
used... used by what?  by whom?  You could even say "baS lo'" the HULL used
the metal, to take form with.
