Indeed there are! By all means, there are a great many Star Trek fans and
Klingon fans and Star Trek and Klingon fan groups all over the world (and
the net) which deal with just these important and significant topics, for
those who find it interesting. These discussions do deserve to take
place... and they should: on mailing lists and newsgroups so designated.
Hebrew cantillation also deserves to be discussed, but that doesn't mean it
belongs here.

I am not advocating removing all discussion of Klingon culture from this
list, but paring it down to those aspects that affect the language. There
have been many discussions here about Klingon culture and how it affects
the language and our understanding of it (for example, the never-ending
"nuqneH" argument which, though personally I don't find it interesting and
feel it's gotten way out of proportion, is still inarguably about the
language and how it's used and how the culture and temperament of Klingons
affect it). But lately I've gotten the feeling that people have mistaken
this list, and the KLI, for a Star Trek/Klingon Fan club. It isn't.
That's not what we're here for. I have nothing against Klingon Fan Clubs,
it just happens that the KLI isn't one. It's not a Doors Fan Club either,
but I have nothing against those fan clubs. It just isn't what we are. If
that's what you want, more power to you; but look in the right place. Join
one of the Fan groups (they're bigger than we are anyway). Discussions
like "Do Klingons eat vegetables?" and "What do Klingons think of Terrans
in their society?" may be interesting questions, and perhaps in some small
aspect might have linguistic ramifications, but at least when couched that
way don't really invite language-related answers.

I fully encourage you to participate in discussions of Klingon culture and
society... but unless those discussions affect the language, please do so
in the appropriate fora. There are newsgroups (alt.startrek.klingon?) for
just such purposes, and I'm sure the folks on [email protected] know of
good places for these coversations.
