Indeed, politeness is very culture-centered.  I studied American Sign
Language myself... It's *rude* among Deaf to say "excuse me" when brushing
past someone to get through between two people who are talking.  Because in
order to sign it, you need to divert their attention from their
conversation, causing much more disruption than if you just pushed your way
gently through and went on (as you're supposed to).
