[Tlhingan-hol] Fwd: "Let’s Translate Walter White, Taylor Swift, and More into"... Klingon

Christopher Kidder-Mostrom ([email protected])

There is one group of folks from this list that is actively translating a number of songs into Klingon and recording them. "HIchop" was our first. "jIyIntaHvIS not qajegh" (Never Gonna Give You Up) will be coming out later this summer in a shot-for-shot recreation of the Rick Astley video in tlhIngan Hol & in Klingon garb. More will follow.

While I watch TV shows I frequently find myself jotting down short,
memorable quotes and trying to translate them. A number of these
require some context of the original.

I tried translating "I am the one who knocks" from Breaking Bad a
while ago, though there isn't really a single verb AFAIK that
encapsulates all the meanings of knock; i.e. hitting a door to make a
noise to request entrance. The full quote is "I am not in danger,
Skyler. I AM the danger! A guy opens his door and gets shot and you
think that of me? No. I am the one who knocks!" Something like
lojmItDaq jIloS jIH'e' might have a similar enough meaning. (Also, I
also translated Breaking Bad itself as "batlhHa' vang".)

For "The Wire" quote, I came up with voDleH DaHIvchugh DaqIpnIS though
this loses some of the idiomatic nature of the original. Would
DaqIpHa'be'nIS work for "need to not miss"? I'm not aware of a verb
that means "miss a target".

Some catchphrases from Game of Thrones... "Winter is Coming", the
motto of House Stark, would be memorable, except I don't think we have
a word for winter. A few weeks ago I translated the Oath of the
Night's Watch (it was a slow weekend), though it's considerably longer
than a catchphrase.
> Dothraki is sure getting a lot of attention lately.
> It strikes me that this is an opportunity to get some attention for Klingon
> too. Maybe we can translate these and have someone record them and submit
> them to Vulture, too, for a companion piece.
>
> "We are never ever ever getting back together" — Taylor Swift
> "I am the one who knocks." — Walter White, Breaking Bad
> "I drink your milkshake." — Daniel Plainview, There Will Be Blood
> "That’s what she said." — Michael Scott, The Office
> "May the force be with you." — Star Wars
> "Live long and prosper."* — Spock, Star Trek
> "You come at the king, you best not miss." — Omar Little, The Wire
> "Talk to the hand ’cause the face ain’t listening." — the 90s
> "That’s what the money’s for" — Don Draper, Mad Men
>
> *Since we know "Live long and prosper" was translated as {yIn nI' yISIQ 'ej
> yIchep} by MO (for Radio Times), maybe we should substitute a suitable
> catchphrase from Game of Thrones for this one. I'm not familiar enough with
> that show to know what that would be, but surely one of you is.
