[Tlhingan-hol] qo''e' tu'bogh pagh - 'ay' wa'

De'vID jonpIn ([email protected])

Here's half of the opening scene from {Hov leng jav: qo''e' tu'bogh pagh}.

Considering that this is one of the movies for which Klingon was created (well, parts of the appendix to TKD anyway), it's surprising how difficult it is to translate some of the lines.

Please send your feedback!

(Gene Roddenberry quvmoHjaj)

SULU (ghogh): Hov poH HutSaD vaghvatlh cha'maH wa' vI' jav. DIvI'may'Duj *Excelsior* HoD QonoS. ra'taH *Hikaru Sulu*. wej ben Dujvam pIn'a' vImojDI' Qu'wIj wa'DIch vItagh. be'ta[1] joghDaq SIp bopbogh 'ej motlhbe'bogh yuQ wanI'mey mem wIgherlI'. pItlh. wa'vatlh vatlhvI' Hong, juH wIchegh.
SULU: mIchvam naQDaq malengchu' 'e' nuja' De'vam.
VALTANE: nughoS HoS yu'egh, poSDaq tajvaj cha'vatlh loSmaH DoD jav.[2]
SULU: HaSta! va... baQa'... botjan!
(ronqu' Duj)
LOJUR: HoD, Duj ra'lu'DI' vangQo'.
SULU: nIH chuyDaH. yItlhe', yu'eghvaD qabmaj tI'ang.[3]
SULU: chunDab lughaylu'bogh neH chaH 'e' yIja'Qo'![6]
VALTANE: Qo'[7], qaH! ...

[1] - Since Betazed is {be'taSeD}...
[2] - Do we know how to express geometric angles? We don't have a word for "degree", so I'll just pretend it was clipped here. (Valtane says, "Port-side, angle: two hundred and forty mark six".)
[3] - How's this for turning to face the wave?
[4] - I'd like to think, based on {vatlhvI'}, that there is a numerical suffix {-vI'} which is somewhat like "-th" in English (i.e., "one hundredth", "one fourth", and so on). So "one quarter" would be {wa' loSvI'}. But OTOH we have a canon sentence from ST:V where "one quarter impulse" is {cha'maH vagh vatlhvI' Hong}. Yuck. I just can't imagine a Klingon saying that in the heat of action.
[5] - Not sure about {tob} here. Maybe {'ol}?
[6] - I'm sure Klingons have a word for meteor shower, but I don't know what that is.
[7] - What's the answer to an imperative with {-Qo'}?

(For Gene Roddenberry)

SULU (voiceover): Stardate 9521.6, Captain's log, U.S.S. Excelsior. Hikaru Sulu
commanding. After three years I've concluded my first assignment as
master of this vessel, cataloguing gaseous planetary anomalies in the
Beta Quadrant. We're heading home under full impulse power. I am
pleased to report that ship and crew have functioned well.
[Excelsior bridge]

SULU: According to this we've completed our exploration of the entire sector.
(the ship begins to shudder and Sulu's teacup rattles off his table
and breaks on the floor)
VALTANE: I have an energy wave from two hundred and forty degrees mark six port.
SULU: Visual! My ...God. ...Shields!
(an energy wave hits the ship throwing the crew about)
LOJUR (OC): Captain, she's not answering her helm.
SULU: Starboard thrusters. Turn her into the wave!
LOJUR: Aye.
SULU: Quarter impulse power! ...Damage report.
EXCELSIOR ENGINEER: Checking all systems, Captain.
SULU: Don't tell me that was any meteor shower.
VALTANE: Negative, sir. ...
