And digraphs for palatalized consonants and other combinations: *ni* +
small *ya* for *nya*, *ki* + small *yo* for *kyo* (+ nigori for *gyo*),
*te* + small *i* for *ti* (+ nigori for *di*), *u* + small *e* for *we*,
etc.
There are a few homonyms (*su* + nigori -> *zu*, *tsu* + nigori -> *zu*,
etc.), but let's just ignore those.
And let's not get into a discussion on the differences between syllables
and morae. :-)
