Sometimes, a "minor" thing is physically larger than a "major" one. For
example, the secondary heating system in an old building I know of is a
gas-fired boiler and associated network of pipes and radiators. It is
several times larger than the primary forced-air furnace and ductwork.
I'll sometimes translate {janHom} as "gadget" or "gizmo", with the intent
of implying that it's somehow less complicated or important than a
full-blown "device". I might interpret {joljanHom} as referring to a
particularly simple transporter, perhaps one not suitable for live
subjects. Or, if I thought I was expected to recognize it as a
Treknological object, I might think it meant "pattern enhancer".
In contrast, the phrase {joljan mach} would be perfect for "small
transporter device".
