Re:Learning

At my first qep'a', on the first night I was wondering what I got myself
into

and why did I go there.

I thought the same thing. Though I don't clearly remember it, my best
friend swears I called her up the first night of qep'a' cha'DIch (1993)
and expressed those concerns. These days I speak Klingon fairly well,
though I tend to break the same grammar rules repeatedly (I'm working on
it!). In the meantime I've attended all but two qep'a'mey, written my
own little things in my spare time, and lurked on the mailing list,
occasionally posting something for the BG to shred. ;)

The trouble with the tape is there is no book to follow along. I really
need to see what I am hearing.

Seeing the words and hearing their sounds simultaneously is important
for me, too. It's difficult on your own with just the books and tapes.
My suggestion is to attend a qepHom, or, better yet, the qep'a'!
Several of us have confessed that when we first attended qep'a' we were
overwhelmed and uncertain of our place there. With a little support
from my friend, I managed to hang in there, and boy, am I glad I did!
At a gathering like the qep'a', you can hear the language spoken. And
no one will fault you for asking them to repeat themselves or to slow
down. We are a friendly and understanding lot. I remember being
frustrated sometimes when trying to follow conversations of more skilled
Klingonists at qep'a'. I had my nose in my TKD the entire time, trying
to follow along. Over time I did that less and less, and people
actually got to see my face! :-)
