DloraH:
: First note that these are names and are not grammaticly correct.
: SImtIq - SIm/calculate(v) + tIq/long(v) - slide-rule
: SImnaQ - SIm + naQ/stick(n) - that thing Joel presented in last HolQeD
Why not avoid compounding a verb with a noun and just say *{SImmeH naQ} "stick
for calculating", as in
{ghojmeH taj} "boy's knife" (i.e. "knife for learning") KCD
{DevmeH paq} "guide(book}" (TKW)
{QongmeH Duj} "sleeper ship" (SkyBox S15)
{SopmeH pa'} "dining room, eating room" (st.k 6/97)
{HoS QaymeH 'och} "power transfer conduit" (BoP Poster)
{Soj polmeH pa'} "food storage [room]" (BoP Poster)
etc.
Less elegant - at least to my ears - is *{SImbogh naQ} "stick that calculates",
e.g. {romuluSngan Sambogh 'ej HoHbogh nejwI'} "Romulan hunter-killer probe" or
a {HoHwI'} for short (KCD). From this, you could probably call both *{SImwI'}
for short if you like.
BTW, not all slide rules are straight. I've used a circular one myself on
occasion, a *{SImmeH gho} if you will.
