RE: KLBC: Definitions

: jatlh 'oghwI':
:
: > wewwI' Lighting device (ie torch [flashlight])?
: Thing which glows - good. I generally perceive "glow" to be nondirectional,
: so I would not use this for a flashlight, but it would work just fine for a
: lamp. That may be just me.
:
: > wovwI' Lighting Device (ie main room light)?
: Thing which is bright. This just seems to generic for me. I don't know why.
: You could use <wovmoHwI'>, though, to mean something which illuminates. This
: would be good for a flashlight, which illuminates a spot or small area, as
: well as for a room light which illuminates the whole room.

Okrand just recently gave us the noun for "light" (the device) in the Klingon Bord-of-Prey Cutaway Poster:

	telDaq wovmoHwI'mey
	Wing Lights

: > could I use SeHlaw for keyboard?
: I don't know for sure, but probably. I think I have before. Perhaps Voragh
: can fill us in on canon use of <SeHlaw>.

{SeHlaw} "control panel" has only appeared once in canon:

	jol SeHlaw lItHa'!
Get off that transporter control panel! PK

I've seen others on this mailing list use *{De'wI' SeHlaw} for "computer keyboard". Others have used {SeHlaw} for a remote control. A rose by any other name...

: > could I use HablI' for telephone / Modem.
: HIja'. Marc Okrand has specifically given use <ghogh HablI'> for
: "telephone". It seems clear enough that a modem (at least the way most
: people use the word) fits into this category as well. If anyone wants to
: disagree and get into a long debate, do it in Klingon, please.

At the same time, Okrand also provided {nav HablI'} for a fax machine, literally a "paper data transceiving device". I suppose if you need to keep your various {HablI'mey} straight, you could always specify *{De'wI' HablI'} for a computer's modem. Though in context it should be quite clear what just {HablI'} refers to.

: > Does poch mean plant as in to plant <something>.
: That's the only way I can think to use it.
:
: > What word would I use for a plant?
: There are lots of words:
: tI - vegetation
: Sor - tree
: lav - shrub
: naH - fruit, vegetable
: tIr - grain
: etc.

Here's an extract from "Klingon for the Galactic Traveller" (p.89) to get you started:

Agriculture (Satlh) is practiced to a certain extent, though it
is common to gather uncultivated plants as well. Fruit or
vegetables that come from a farm (Du') are called either {naH} alone
or {Du' naH} (farm fruit or vegetable or produce); the wild variety
is termed {naH tlhab} (literally, free fruit or vegetable). The verb
{yob} (harvest) is used to refer to gathering up plants or plant parts,
whether from a field (yotlh) that has been sown or out in the wild.
The verb meaning farm is {wIj}; that meaning plant (referring to
vegetation of any kind) is {poch}. One may say {Sor poch} (He/she
	plants a tree), {lav poch} (He/she plants a shrub), and even {naH
poch} (He/she plants fruit or vegetables), referring to the ultimate
use of the plant as a food source.
