Re: Palm pilot advice

I have owned most models of the PalmPilot:

I bought a PalmPilot 1000, then upgraded to 1MB RAM.

I broke the screen and sent it back for repair.

I broke the screen again and decided to get a Personal PalmPilot
so I could get the backlight. It only had 500K RAM, but I
figured I'd scavenge the RAM from the 1000. Unfortunately, the
system ROM is on the same card, so if I swapped in the 1MB card,
I lost the OS that knows how to turn on the backlight. I endured
low memory for a while.

In Denmark, I smashed the screen on my Personal PalmPilot and
searched three cities before finding what may be the only
PalmPilot in Denmark. It was a Professional PalmPilot and it
cost about $100 more than in the US. I bought it anyway.

Back home, a coworker had a Palm III and changed his mind about
wanting it. As a UNIX geek, it didn't quite suit his needs. He
made the deal sweet enough that I couldn't turn it down.

When I got back from qep'a', I got a new laptop because my old
one was old, and... well, I hurt it. While I was setting up my
new laptop, I knocked my Palm III off the table and while the
screen didn't crack, it also never came on again.

So, I got a Palm IIIx.

I love it. The screen is much clearer in a wider range of
lighting conditions, so I very rarely need to use the backlight
(which really extends battery life). It also has twice the RAM
of the Palm III.

I've seen the Palm V. It is prettier and sleeker and uses the
same bright screen, but it costs $100 more and it has half the
RAM of the IIIx. My first choice would be IIIx (because of the
bright screen and the 4MB RAM). Second choice would be V
(because of the bright screen and sleek case, despite 2MB RAM).
Third choice would be IIIe (which is not out yet, but has the
new screen, the old case and the "normal" 2MB RAM). There's a
special edition IIIe coming out with a translucent case. I guess
that's for iMac users. Fourth choice would be a Palm III. Cheap,
but useful. Old screen, 2MB RAM.

The old screen is still good. It's just that the new one is
strikingly better.
