This all depends on how you count them.
Do you count proper names? Some are in the word lists, while
others are in TKD, but not in the word lists.
Do you count the curse words that are in TKD but not in the word
list?
Do you count the Klingon entries or the English entries?
When a word appears in two different word lists with slightly
different definitions, does that count as one word or as two?
And what if the definitions are slightly less similar? What if
they are very dissimmilar?
Do you count obvious derivatives like {ghoj} and {ghojmoH} as
separate words?
Some people count over 3,000 words. I think they even include
the Klingon names of people on this mailing list.
I combine similar definitions, not counting words as separate
unless they are different parts of speech. I count 2,080 words
not including 195 words that I've labeled as "derivatives", but
that involves a LOT of judgement calls, and I'm not especially
consistent because I eventually realized that the boundaries are
vague. There is no sense pretending to accurately count the
number of available Klingon words.
As I said, it all depends on what you consider to be a word.
You'd likely be safe saying the number is somewhere between
2,000 and 3,000 words.
