I find myself in agreement with 'Iwvan (sorry ~mark) on this one, and of
the two choices presented the only one that makes sense to a speaker of
<tlhIngan Hol> would be /ta-DI-'oS/ and never /ta-DI'-oS/.
Of course there's nothing wrong with /ta-DI'-'oS/, and if he's giving equal
stress to the syllables when he pronounces it, I suspect that his natural
inclination (as an English speaker) will be to add the glottal stop on the
end of the second syllable.
Also, as follow up to something else 'Iwvan mentioned (in his follow up to
his own post), yes, it is true Okrand has at times gone out of his way to
ensure that Klingon violates the sort of things we've come to expect of
terrestrial languages. HOWEVER, keep in mind that one of the requirements
laid down at the outset for the language was that it should be
pronounceable by actors. Having Okrand on the set as dialogue coach during
the filming may be all well and good for teaching them how to bark and
spit, but the kind of mechanisms we're talking about here are probably not
as easily conveyed without more of a linguistics lesson than a director
would presumably appreciate. Moral of the story: when in doubt, bow to
pragmatics.
