Yikes! I started this again - sorry!

The books are not regarded as canonical, and even John Ordover, the editor
at Pocket books says so. The best example of this is the great book
_Federation_ that is wildly contradicted by the movie First Contact.

The books DO use canonical material, and with rare occasion new "facts"
from the book (especially if someone like Jeri Taylor writes them) work
into the shows. Also "reference" materials like the Klingon books, the
Omnipedia, Encyclopedia, Chronology and so forth are used by the writers
of the shows and therefore, can become canonical. [And yes, the scolds
may point out that the reference material is at times used in a slapdash
manner].
