Sometimes I find myself agreeing with Glen (or Glen agreeing with me, cf. an old
article of mine in HolQeD, "Okrand's Jokes"), sometimes I wonder where the hell
he's coming from.
Items like "betray" and "translate" leap out, and they're pretty well known in
linguistics (and I'm as surprised as Voragh that Holtej missed this!), others
like "dictator" make me want to wait around for Glen to start blaming that darn
striking Feklahr.
More to the point though, Glen's posts, infrequent though they may be, always
stir up controversy and discussion. And I have to see that as healthy.
Voragh makes the following point:
> Also puns (intentional or otherwise) do make it easier for many of us
> to remember what the Klingon "words" mean. I'm all in favor of
> identifying as many as we can simply as a pedagogical tool.
I may be mistaken in this, but I believe that this is probably Glen's main
point. His teaching style in the past has stressed forming meaningful
associations between Klingon vocabulary and similar sounding/meaning words in
English (and other languages). And this technique works very well for many
people. Sometimes I think Glen carries it a bit too far, but that's maybe just
a personal judgment call.
