Real answer: Paramount writers make up harsh-sounding words and
bestow them on their characters. Marc Okrand occasionally backfits
them to "official" tlhIngan Hol spelling. that seem to suit the
characters
Answer for the purpose of pretending Okrand really does have a
Klingon gunner in his basement: We don't know. They appear to have
some traditional names, and to use many names that don't fit the
phonetic system of their language. These could be taken from other
Klingon or alien languages, or just follow a differnt system for
names. Mark Shoulson sometimes suggests that we don't know the
Klingons' real names, only the names they present to outsiders. I
have met a lot of people who gave me a name like "Simon" or "Theo" to
use, only later revealing true names like "Mbezi" or "Xien Wu."
If you're making up a name to use for yourself, choose absolutely
anything that you are comfortable being called, and can handle being
caled for some time. If you're making up names for your NPCs, just
choose something gutteral, say it fast, and let the non-Klingon
speaking players decide what you said. :)
