README: IMPORTANT [TLHINGAN-HOL TOPICS]

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

This is an extremely long post. I would suggest that EVERYONE read it,
because failure to do so may very well result in your removal from this list.

I've noticed many inappropriate posts recently. I've singled a couple of them
out (both from the same person; Nothing personal, I promise) to point out
what kind of postings AREN'T appropriate on tlhIngan-Hol.

First, though, let me make another note -- I'm tired of the "postcard"
postings from the stupid postcard request. Don't reply to it. Any postings
I see on the matter after today (thursday, the 5th) will result in
loss of posting ability to this list. (Yes, I'm serious). Everyone will
be happy to know that those kinds of spam postings result in instant life
ban from posting to this list... No other responses are required (and
if you must respond, RESPOND PRIVATELY).

Remember, if it isn't in Klingon, or about Klingon, DON'T POST IT TO THE
TLHINGAN-HOL LIST! PERIOD. There are -no- exceptions to this rule. [Well,
not true. The list owners reserve the right to post anything they feel
appropriate].

Now, on with our specimens.

Our first message has several things wrong with it. My mailer benchmarks
the message at 141 lines long. After looking at that message, I see exact
5 lines of added content, 18 lines of signature, and (141 - 5 - 18 = 118)
lines of quoted message. Of that 118 lines, 6 lines are actually being
replied to, and the rest (118 - 6 = 112) as extra garbage that are not
needed in any way whatsoever.

So, lets assume that signature, added content, and useful quoted content
are all "useful" material. That's a total of (18 + 5 + 6 = 29) lines of
useful message, leaving 112 l material. Percentage wise,
that means roughly 80% (4/5) of this post should never have been
transmitted.

Now, that's just on the surface, without actually looking at the post.

As I browse this posting, I see the word "Klingon" mentioned several
times... And nowhere, other than in someone's signature, do I see a SINGLE
word of Klingon, and NOWHERE do I see the Klingon language actually
discussed.

The second thing that I notice is that there are no fewer than three
signatures in this posting -- A 12 line one quoted, an 18 line one quoted,
and an 18 line one at the end. That's one-third of this long post, made
completely of signatures.

Consider that Netiquitte proclaims that signatures should be 4 lines at
most, and should never be quoted in a response (unless there is a specific
reason for doing so). That's a LOT of lines of signatures.

Summary: Don't quote more than you need to to make a specific response.
Don't make your signature more than 4 lines. Don't post about something
that isn't written in the Klingon language or about the Klingon language.

Now, our second specimen. This one I won't pick apart in quite the same
detail. However, I do have some notes...

First, there is 9again) much too much quoting. The topic being
discussed/questioned could have been summed up in a few lines of quoting.

Second, there's that 18 line signature again, along with two lines of added
text. That's 18 lines of useless information, 2 lines of useful information.
I won't do the math on that one, but I think most of you are able to figure
out the signal to noise ratio there.

Third.... What the -heck- does this thing have to do with the Klingon
language? Or, even by a s in general? Yes, I know
is the name of a Klingon in the series (or at least some similar name), but
isn't discussing how that comes from things in other languages stretching
things just a LITTLE bit?

I think so (and it's my list).

Anyhow, that's all I have to say about the matter. We can avoid me having
to ever post something like this again, and avoid me having to unsubscribe
folks, if everyone will just use a little COMMON SENSE when they post. It
won't hurt. I promise.

Oh, yes. If anyone feels the need to respond to this one, RESPOND PRIVATELY.
I mean it.

									-WW

[Note the 3 character signature, above... Just as effective as an 18 line
one, and less annoying.]

That's an interesting point. Do we have any recorded histories that one
might look to to find out about changes in fighting strategies that go
along with th e change in Empire. The Chinese martial arts were
originally taught as military tactics. Do the Klingon martial arts have a
similar morphology?
