Some people use dialup accounts from home. In other words: if there's
nobody interesting there, so that the MUSH-visit could be worth the
costs involved, I'm not going to be around for more than the time I
need to find that fact out. But of course the same is true for an IRC
channel. I hardly ever IRC (from home) either...
These things (MUSH'es and IRC) are a great idea as long as you've got
a permanent Internet link (like from your work, univerity or school)
and that's where the idea came from no doubt, but for a lot of people
on the net it just isn't an option. It's just to expensive
(relatively). Those few times I do take a look at IRC is when I'm
downloading a batch of emails and newsheaders...
