My impression is that it is more a matter of "saving face" than "regaining 
favor," which would otherwise imply you had someone's favor in the first place.

Replacement proverbs come into play when you do something stupid, like knocking 
over the pitcher of bloodwine when you're reaching across the table to get 
another helping of qagh.  As everyone stops and stares at you for being such a 
total yutz you whip out a replacement proverb.
