KLI and the Klingon CD-ROM

I had an interesting conversation with Liz Braswell today. Liz is the associate
producer on the upcoming Klingon CD-ROM from Simon & Schuster Interactive.

It seems that one of the features of the CD will be to allow users to practice
their Klingon out loud, responding to sound clips that are on the CD. The
software is to include the ability to analyze your spoken response and to tell
you if you pronounced the Klingon correctly or not.

I'm not sure how this technology works, but as I understand it they need to have
a number of different people saying the same words, to give the computer a
dataase of exceptable references. Presumably it extrapolates or interpolates or
somehow uses this database in determining whether the user of the CD has
correctly pronounced the word.

Now the trick of course for Simon & Schuster was, "where do we get twenty
Klingon speakers?" Enter the KLI's involvement in the project.

I don't have a lot of specifics yet. Basically, they'd like me to put together
a list of ten male and ten female Klingon speakers for the project. The
recording probably has to be done in New York, and while we have a number of
good speakers on the east coast, only a couple are within a reasonable range of
New York. Still, it's not yet clear how they'll handle this.

I haven't had any offers yet of paying for transportation, or anything else.
This is still very much in the initial planning stages. However, if YOU would
like to be considered among the volunteer speakers, and if you can produce a
good Klingon "Q," "tlh," and "gh" then send me a note and I'll add you to the
list.

In fact, let's make this a bit more structured:

1) Send me a note with "KLINGON SPEAKER" as the subject line.
2) Include your full legal name (they'll probably need this).
3) Include your city and state.
4) Include a telephone number (with area code) and an email address.

I'll put together the list, run it by Liz in a few weeks, and report back any
new developments as I hear of them.

All in all though, this is a tremendous opportunity for the KLI.
