It's my experience that you can theoretically write a dissertation on 
most anything you like, if you can get a doctoral committee to agree to 
it.  And I point out that from your post it is not clear what the degree 
would be in (though most folks here have been reasonably assuming it 
would be in linguistics).  I think a theological degree would not be 
unreasonable either, given the subject matter.

I don't know if it is Proechel (even assuming the rumor is based on any 
fact), but if memory serves I believe that Glen's master's was in 
theology, and he did not have a Ph.D. last time I talked with him.  But 
I'm certainly not going to ask.  :)
