Despite our mutually hectic and busy schedules, Marc Okrand and I finally
had the opportunity to chat briefly yesterday (something we've been
trying to do for the last three weeks or so).
Since there will probably be some interest in this, let me share a couple
of his explanations.
1) There's been some question on the rules for applying stress, some
difference of opinion on the correct interpretation of Section 1.3 (much
of this has been discuss somewhat privately by the principles involved in
the translation of Hamlet). The question centered on whether or not the
rule of applying stress to *any* syllable ending in a glottal stop (') or
only when such a syllable was a part of the word stem (i.e., *not* an
affix). The word from Marc is that this rule applies to ANY syllable in
the word, not just to those involved in the word stem.
2) The word from PK which is glossed as "curse" <<mu'qaD>> is not a curse
as in "I put a curse upon you and your house" or anything like that. Nor
is it a swear word. Marc intended this as a term for covering the sort of
give-and-take name calling that Klingons might indulge in such as
"dishonored son of a Rigellian spice merchant" (my lame example, no
Okrand's).
