I have also had problems with this, mostly in the past.
I think it is mostly what machines are between the list and you, and how
they process the mail, as compared to how the mail goes through to
someone else.
Sort of like it is fast/easier to send mail from, say, Chicago to New
York, because these are frequently travelled to/from cities, but sending
something to, say Antarica is a pain and very slow.
