Re: KBTP: Marcan vocabulary

Hu'tegh! nuq ja' [email protected] jay'?

=I heard {ngagh} on the tape. ({targhlIj yIngagh yIruch} "Go mate with your
=targ") Imesho, you should be careful using these words for which we have no
=written canonical examples. You might be right, but then again, if Okrand
=ever comes out and tells us it was {ngagh} on the tape instead on {nagh},
=you'll have to go back and change every one of those {nagh}'s. What a task.

There is a staggeringly simple way to resolve this, and I'm flabbergasted
noone's actually carried it out yet. Get the versions of the PK and CK words
that have passed into the parser word lists (Appleyard, at least, has used
Mark's transcriptions, thence so have I), run them under Okrand's nose (the
man isn't the God Figure in ST:V, he isn't past the Great Barrier, surely he
can look over a *wordlist*), and publish in the next HolQeD.

Mark, please send your wordlist to Lawrence (if you haven't already). This
has gone on long enough.

=Still, it's a good word. We need more like it, since all the curses we have
=are either nouns or interjections. No verbs.

I am wondering about other "taboo" expressions. My translation of "codpiece"
in Much Ado has to be read to be believed! And John Ford's Klingonaase
vocab is, of course, worthless for our purposes: nothing will make "g'dayt"
("shit") a tlhIngan Hol word. (ghIDayIt? gheDay'te? 'eghDa'It? Blah!)

=Also, I wish Okrand would give us more info on Klingon cursing, so some of us
=who really wanted to put some effort into the endeavor could truly master the
="fine art of swearing".

Absolutely, though I agree with (was it Drujiv? Tri'Qal? Someone else violating
Klingon phonology? ;) ) who said that the "Your mama wears combat boots"
school of *inventive* mu'qaD veS would probably prove more profitable than
obscenities. Though I'll admit, my translation of "penis" in "codpiece" was
just *silly*... (and it was *not* "Flesh Torpedo" (Ha'DIbaHpeng), although,
after some listens to Spinal Tap, that's starting to sound attractive...)

Nick.
