refuge, and whose opinion Mahoun sought as he went to meet Thrxan for the
first time.<br><br>
[298] Thrxan is the Andorian youth whose antennae were severed and
cauterized by slavers and whom Mahoun was given by a Federation vessel
who mistakenly believed him to be a Yelwitian.<br><br>
[300] I visited Cambodia a couple of years ago on a humanitarian aid
project. We were told that in the village where we worked, many of the
children went to work for a few years in brothels on the Thai border, and
then came home without it being a source of shame. I'm not sure exactly
what the financial arrangements were, but that's pretty close to selling
your own children into contract slavery.<br><br>
[301] The Yelwitian equivalent of being unable to stay out of credit card
debt? Although in this case I think the {vay'} applies to persons, and
she keeps reselling herself to buy members of her extended families out
of bad situations. By the way, Yelwitians don't have student debt,
because if you want an educated workforce you either buy children and pay
to educate them, or you buy educated slaves from someone who has done so
on spec. If you buy a kid to educate them and they don't turn out to be a
good student, then you might flip them to a brothel or a rug factory.
Yeah, you thought this story was long. And then you realize all the
directions it ended up not going. <br><br>
[323] I messed this up a little when Thrxan said that he understood.
Mahoun merely intended that he try to understand the mood of the music,
and when he said he did, that was how Mahoun took it. At least one reader
understood it the way Thrxan meant it, so has suspected all along that he
knew. Well now you know you were right, and I'll try to fix that bit so
it's more subtle.<br>
