RE: Simple material

Welcome to the list, chal yItwI'. My name is pagh, and I am the current
Beginners' Grammarian for the list. It's my job to help beginners learn
Klingon. Whenever you have a post you want help with, mark it for my
attention by putting the letters KLBC in the subject line.

Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot out there.

The KLI publishes an annual anthology of poetry and fiction called <jatmey>,
and this is probably the best source for reading material. Some of the
stories from <jatmey> are fairly easy to read, but some can be quite
difficult. It is not available online.

The best idea is to follow a discussion thread, starting at the first
message. An awful lot of the messages on the list make absolutely no sense
to anyone who has not read the messages (sometimes dozens) the post is
responding to.

Qov posted a series of stories a few years back ('96 or '97, I think) about
the Bemorians (look for <bemorngan> if you are searching the archives) which
are fairly easy and quite good.

You can also find a few long series of messages in which ghunchu'wI'
describes his vacations. Most of these are fairly easy to read as well.

There is a postal course conducted by David Barron that you may find useful.
I believe it's listed in the FAQ, but the contact information is not up to
date. If you are interested, I will post the new address.

We all learn differently, so what works for me may not work for you. What I
did was simple - I made a rule for myself that I would never delete a
message with good Klingon content until I had read and understood the whole
thing. I did not always follow this rule, and at one point my mailbox had
over a thousand messages in it, but I think it helped.

Once you have a good feel for the grammar and want to increase your
vocabulary, I reccommend a program written by ter'eS called KLIFlash. It's
essentially a flashcard program, and it's great for building vocabulary.

I also suggest visiting the MUSH (telnet keve.kli.org 2218). It's usually
pretty deserted, but on November first starting at noon EST there will be a
virtual qepHom, so there should be at least a few people there.
