I once talked to a scientist who said that we have no fuel
shortage problem because of the oil shale. Just drill into the
middle of a huge site of oil shale, drop a small nuclear
warhead into it, shatter the shale and drain off the oil.
I pointed out that the oil would be radio-active and useless to
us for a few thousand years. He countered that this was not his
area of specialty and so it was not his problem.
