Re: Pronouncing "''"

: I was wondering, are you really supposed to pronounce ' twice when
: it occurs twice ('')? I think it's really hard to do that without
: inserting a paus in between the two apostrophes, which makes it sound
: like you're pronouncing two words. A good example is a sentence in TKD
: {De''e' vItlhapnISpu'} which for me is almost impossible to pronounce,
: unless I pronounce it as {De'e' vItlhapnISpu'} or
: {De' 'e' vItlhhapnISpu'} (which, of course, is incorrect, at least
: in writing). The former being what I'm wondering about, if it's correct
: to pronounce it like that.

There is a *very slight* pause between the two glottal stops, at least as I
pronounce them. I don't know whether Klingons could distinguish easily
between {De''e' vItlhapnISpu'} and {?De' 'e' vItlhhapnISpu'} in normal,
rapid speech without context. But then, who - other than linguists providing
example utterances - actually speaks without any context in "real" life?

If you have the audio tapes, you can hear Marc Okrand pronounce this
combination himself.

>From "Conversational Klingon":

  Where is the bathroom?
  nuqDaq 'oH puchpa''e'

>From "Power Klingon":

You belong in a black hole in the Netherworld!
  ghe''orDaq luSpet 'oH DaqlIj'e'

(This curse is said twice; the second during the dinner scene at the end of
side B.)

A great warrior is always prepared.

  Where's the bathroom?
  Proper: nuqDaq 'oH puchpa''e'
  Clipped: nuqDaq puchpa'
