I believe the meaning intended was that Qapla', like Aloha and Shalom, is a
greeting used both for meetings and partings (as opposed to our separate
"hello" and "goodbye.") I don't think tevram was trying to imply a
denotational equivalence.
(Now, "aloha" is interesting in itself, since it means something like
"greetings" or "blessings" or some such, and what's fun is that it's not
used in singular. When you greet one person with it, the full form of the
greeting is "aloha XXXX" where XXXX is a pronoun which I've forgotten
that's in *first person inclusive dual*, not second person singular. You
really are wishing greetings on "you and me." Similarly, greeting more
than one person uses a pronoun in first person inclusive plural. [Hawai'ian
distinguishes numbers in singular, dual, and plural, and first person
dual/plural pronouns in inclusive (we including you) and exclusive (we but
not you).] End of digression.)
