I do think it needs some more :->

~marks sentence means to me, he went to the kennels(?)
of the targhmey, watched the captain there with the
targhmey, and from that experience can tell which
he likes and dislikes.

charghwI's first sentence I read as, he saw the targhmey
the captain likes - nothing more. The second lacks
the reason the english sentence implies, so I'd add
something like wIv HoD 'e' vItu'mo' (or if there's a
less ambiguous way to say 'notice, observe'...)

anyway - there's no need to make s.th. up in order
to translate 'which' in this context
