I know that the a highlight of qep’a’ for many of the non-attendees is the possibility of new words or grammar from Marc Okrand. To this I generally say, “eat what’s on your plate before you ask for more.” I know that I myself do not have a perfect command
of all the vocabulary and grammar we already have, and I focus my efforts towards increasing my recall and precision with those words. But here is what I learned from Marc this year.

He apologized unprompted for not addressing the request list from last year. He still has it, and it’s on his mind, just untouched.

It would appear that he is working on the current Star Trek movie, but can’t say anything about it under a non-disclosure agreement.

There are Klingon lines that he wrote but that were not used in the previous Star Trek movie and he was unsure whether the NDA would allow him to reveal them to us.

He explained again that some of the tlhIngan Hol in Into Darkness had to be created to match the lip movements of someone speaking already created Klingon lines, WITH THE VIDEO PLAYED BACKWARDS!

He said that a leak could be said to be was the reason he was called in to rework the Vulcan lines for Star Trek II. Because the news of Spock’s death leaked, they inserted the scene at the beginning where he “dies” in the Kobayashi Maru scenario. That
meant that in the next scene with Spock and Saavik, Saavik’s character had already met Kirk, so her line had to be changed. Enter Marc.

He didn’t feel he had anything new he could report this year, so just let the new people ask questions and retold stories we know and love.

I generally like to let him relax and enjoy qep’a’ free from interrogation, but at the “Ask Marc” session he indicated that I should ask him my questions one-on-one, so here’s the result of a fairly informal hallway conversation. Note that this was a conversation
with Marc, not matlh, so not canon.

- be’’etlh and neb’a’ brought their infant son to qep’a’ and I suggested to Marc that describing the activities of an infant would be a completely “family-friendly” way to introduce some of the vocabulary we lack. He was receptive to that, and also mentioned
that now he has retired he isn’t quite as concerned about the need to be “family-friendly.”

- I asked him about how we would describe someone’s right hand. I said I would say nIHwIj ghop ‘the hand of my right side’ and he said “I would do that too,” making a dissatisfied face about the alternative nIH ghopwIj ‘my hand of the right side.’

- I asked “or are nIH and poS like tlhop and ‘em, taking the pronoun rather than the possessive suffix?” but he felt that nIHwIj was correct.

- I asked if vogh could be used for a static locative, or was it only pa’ naDev and Dat that did not take –Daq. He said that he did not think he had intended the list in TKD to be exclusive, and that vogh could probably be a locative all by itself, but that
he would have to re-read it to be sure.

ghunchu’wI’ and others were there during the conversation and I invite them to add or correct anything they may recall differently.
