Subject: [Tlhingan-hol] street/postal address terminology
We only have limited vocabulary for dealing with street addresses (Sep, yoS,
veng). In Star Trek they mostly use transporter coordinates, but sometimes
they must still have to send someone to a street (or what is called a
postal) address, right?
If you had to translate the labels on an address input device, how would you
render the following into Klingon? (I have a good idea for most of them, but
I don't know how best to ask for a "street address", since I have no idea
what a "street" is in Klingon.)
I'm specifically answer the question "how would YOU render," not giving any
hard rule.
I would say <veng Quv> and leave the people who don't live in a veng to
deal.
Country - Sep
Region - yoS (I think KGT makes the Sep-yoS hierarchy a little clearer than
TKD)
City - veng
Province - yoS (Are there countries that have both regions and provinces? If
so yoS and yoSHom)
State (i.e., US State) - yoS
Suburb - veng retlh
District - yoS -- Just as someone from France or Russia has to deal with
arrondisements and oblasts when filling out an English form, provide a few
levels of hierarchy and make people fit their needs into them. Surely no
postal system has that many levels!
Street - veng He
Street Address - veng Quv
Postal code - mIch mI'
ZIP code - mIch mI'
Post office box -
Floor number - choQ mI'
Apartment number - pa' mI'
Island - puHHom
Localised/regional/specialised variants of the above:
Administrative area, locality, parish, department, emirate, prefecture, etc.
yoS/yoSHom, Daq, lalDan loHmeH yoS, malja'Hom, wo'Hom, never heard of a
prefecture.
Or you know,
SoHvaD vay' vIngeHnISchugh, DaSIchmeH navDaq nuq vIghItlhnIS?

People are going to be cramming things the programmer's haven't thought of
into whatever system you come up with anyway.
