the glottal stop

Just exactly how would one pronounce a glottal stop before the word?
Example: " 'a "-but, nevertheless, even so, however (conj.)
Would one suddenly start the sound? Is the end cut off or does it linger (I
recall M. O. going over the glottal stop in C. K. but I can only recall the
ending sound being explained, not the beginning)?
