People of highest virtue do not follow virtue;
that is why they have virtue.
People of lowest virtue do not stray from virtue;
that is why they lack virtue.
People of highest virtue take no action
yet they lack reasons for doing so.
People of lowest virtue take action
yet they have reasons for doing so.
People of highest compassion take action
yet they lack reasons for doing so.
People of highest justice take action
yet they have reasons for doing so.
People of highest rituals take action
yet if someone does not respond
they show their fists to them and make them comply.
When Tao is renounced virtue will arise.
When virtue is renounced compassion will arise.
When compassion is renounced justice will arise.
When justice is renounced rituals will arise.
Ritual is but a shadow of sincerity.
It's the beginning of confusion.
Foreknowledge is but a husk of Tao.
It's the beginning of ignorance.
Therefore those who are great dwell in the solid core
and not in the shadow.
They dwell in the fruit, not in the husk.
It's the fuit they choose, the husk they spurn.
[A] I'm not sure if I need {ghajbogh} here. Perhaps
the slightly mechanical first part of this chapter
would sound better without it:

But if so, I'd be a little sorry to lose the {-'e'} on {nuv} in the first
