Abbreviating in Chinese is done by dropping characters so that the result is 
still understood, usually after seeing the abbreviation many times.

Examples:  Beijing University = bei-jing da-xue = bei-da
President Jiang Zemin = Jiang Zemin Zongtong = Jiang Shi
