What I remember was that you used something like {'lj}, and some of us did
recognize what it was supposed to mean.  It was kind of fun, but the idea of
using abbreviations or acronyms was discouraged.  (After all, this is a
phonetic transcription, not a writing system.  We may write "etc.", but when
we read it we say "et cetera".)
