My problem with using grammatical terms like "dative case" is that the
student then assumes that it works just like the dative case of whatever
inflected language s/he already knows. We have a hard enough time already
with people saying "oh, this suffix is kind of like the
Quechuan/French/Arabic/Zulu concept, so that means I can use it the way
that language does."
