Say'IluD:
: San jan
: literally "fate's device". There is no direct translation, so you would have
: to come up with an equivalent phrase. <San> means "fate". <jan> means
"device".

Not bad.  If by Providence Pascal means the gods, then substitute {Qunpu'}
"gods" for {San}.

: I can find no word that means "tool". A reasonable synonym for "tool" is
: "device", but that does not convey what I think of when I think of "tool".

I agree; "device" sounds more mechanical than a mere "tool". (But maybe they
are in the 24th century! Most, if not all, of the tools I've seen in Trek have
been covered with blinking lights and many make noises when used. Surely
engineers will still use hammers, awls, wrenches, screwdrivers and crowbars
even on starships.) Although we do have Klingon words for specific kinds of
tools and implements, we don't seem to have one for a tool/implement in
general.

: Can you elaborate on the context of the phrase?

Is this for a name, or are you trying to translate a sentence? If the latter,
we might be able to rephrase it to take advantage of what vocabulary we do
have.
