Speaking of sheep and puns, people do *breed* sheeps, do they not?

[I agree with you that mongrel dogs are obviously not of mixed
or indeterminate *species*, but the word "species" is used rather
loosely in everyday speaking.  More than once I've heard people
say "(fe)male species" when they meant "(fe)male sex/gender".]
