I would add one thing to the <'> explanation - most American English
speakers pronounce the word "bet" like the Klingon word <be'> - that is, we
often do not put a sharp \t\ at the end, and 'swallow' it, producing a
glottal stop instead. If you say <be'> like the common American English
"bet" but pronounce that glottal stop a little more forcefully, you've got
it down.
American speakers tend to start words beginning with vowels with glottal
stops anyway, so initial <'>'s are not a big challenge. The <'>'s that end a
syllable always follow a vowel, <w>, or <y>. Perhaps that makes it clearer.
