This is a good example of irresponsibly perpetuating misinformation and
the kind of pointless waste of energy that arises from this sort of mini
hysteria.
Paramount is not, and has not, been shutting down websites for simply
using various Trek related symbols, including those that are legally
protected by trademark and copyright. They have only, as far as I am
aware, gone after websites which are either 1) selling materials which
are the intellectual property of Paramount (or Viacom, if you prefer),
and/or 2) freely distributing materials which they otherwise sell (such
as copies of episode and movie scripts) and which as such are taking
money out of their hands.
I'm not happy being put in the position of having to defend Paramount,
but the posting above makes it necessary. Let's stay focused on the
facts, not fifth hand report of a friend of a friend of a friend's
roommate's brother-in-law's sister's boyfriend's site being *shut down*.
I'll happily listen to the tale directly from the mouth of any webmaster
who received a "cease and desist" letter from Paramount's lawyers, but
don't expect too much sympathy if his/her page fits under either of the
two points I've outlined above, and they knew about it all along.
If you want to complain about Paramount and their practices, there is
plenty to bemoan in reality without generating fictious accounts and
offenses.
Sorry for climbing on the soapbox, but this is a private listserv, NOT a
usenet group.
