Before I even read the post, one answer that should be considered: There
may not be one. There's no rule that different words have to have distinct
meanings; many languages have synonyms or near-synonyms, or words which
differ only stylistically (say, the formality or register in which you
would use them). Doesn't mean there isn't a difference, but don't close
your mind to the possibility that there isn't one.
